On 13 December 2025. His Excellency President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has attended the inauguration ceremony of the Male’ Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC)’s “Irun Hakatha” programme in R. Dhuvaafaru, marking another step in the Maldives’ transition towards renewable energy.
The programme was officially inaugurated by the Minister of Cities, Local Government and Public Works, Mr. Adam Shareef Umar, alongside the Managing Director of MWSC. Senior government officials, representatives from MWSC, and members of the local community were also present at the ceremony.
The Irun Hakatha programme is designed to support the national target of generating 33 per cent of the country’s electricity from renewable energy sources by the end of 2026. Through the increased use of clean energy solutions, the initiative aims to reduce reliance on diesel-powered electricity generation, which has long been a major cost and environmental burden for island communities.
The inauguration of the Irun Hakatha programme reflects the government’s continued commitment to expanding renewable energy infrastructure, strengthening energy security, and advancing sustainable development in line with national policies and international climate commitments.
