With the Maldives tourism industry celebrating its 50-year anniversary in October 2022, one of the biggest reasons for the industry coming this far throughout the years is undoubtedly due to the heavy marketing campaigns that are carried out.

The Maldives being a small island nation meant that not many people were aware of its location or the beautiful natural attractions that the country had to offer: this was very much the case when the tourism industry was first started out in the country, however, the different forms of marketing campaigns being carried out internationally have allowed the industry to flourish into what it is today.

Now, the Maldives is known all over the world as one of the most popular destinations that people travel to for luxurious getaways as well as one of the most romantic honeymoon destinations that couples from around the globe look forward to visiting.

And while postings on the internet and word-of-mouth might have played a big role in the marketing of the Maldives in the earlier days of the tourism industry, the hard efforts being put into marketing the country to different countries and demographics are heavily due to the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC).

By August of 2022, MMPRC had carried out several campaigns and road shows in an effort to tap into new demographics and new tourist markets in several countries. Some of the efforts carried out this year include 32 fairs; 3 roadshows in 7 cities; 16 FAM Trips; 6 virtual events 12 joint promotions and 12 social media campaigns carried out in different locations.

However, industry partners also play a crucial role when it comes to helping come up with ideas on how to market the Maldives to foreign markets in a way that is most beneficial to the Maldives. One such event that is hosted in collaboration with MMPRC and the tourism industry stakeholders in order to collaborate on collecting ideas and getting feedback on marketing the country better is the Tourism Marketeers Evening which is hosted annually.

“MMPRC has always prioritised working in collaboration with the industry when we craft the strategies that promote the Maldives as a destination. The ideas, feedback, and even criticism we get from our industry partners are crucial to constantly keep improving our brand. I am extremely grateful to all the attendants for the tremendous support we received for this year’s Tourism Marketeers Evening.”
Thoyyib Mohamed - Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of MMPRC

The Tourism Marketeers Evening 2022 was held on September 28, 2022, at Meeruma with 41 tourism professionals in order to discuss ideas on ways to market the Maldives in the coming year, 2023. This was the first Tourism Marketeers Evening hosted since the pandemic, which prevented the hosting of the event for the past two years.
