On 13 August 2024, the Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) hosted a ceremonial ribbon-cutting event to celebrate the arrival of Air Arabia Group’s inaugural flight at Terminal 1. This milestone not only marks the official launch of Air Arabia’s operations from the newly opened terminal but also represents a significant moment for Velana International Airport (VIA) in enhancing its global connectivity.
Later that same day, Air Arabia passengers experienced their first departure from Terminal 1, an occasion that VIA described as delivering a smooth and seamless passenger journey. The airline’s first arrival was also celebrated in style, with the aircraft receiving a traditional water salute upon landing.
To commemorate the occasion, MACL Chairperson Ms. Aeysha Nurain Janah, along with CEO and Managing Director Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed and other senior management members, personally welcomed the first passengers arriving on Air Arabia’s debut Terminal 1 flight, marking the beginning of a new chapter in VIA’s aviation history.
