Around three years ago the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) was handed over the exciting project of developing the airport at M. Muli. Just like any other airport development project in the Maldives, the development of an airport in M. Muli will see the Atoll getting better connectivity, improving the transformation for the citizens as well as travellers seeking to explore the destination.

The project, which was handed over to MTCC during the former administration led by Ibrahim Mohamed Solih aimed to develop the airport within a span of one year with a budget of MVR 212 million. At the time, the project aimed to develop a runway which was 1200 meters long in addition to developing a terminal building as well as other necessary facilities for a proper functioning airport. Although this was an exciting project that the citizens looked forward to being completed, the airport development project faced major issues, maily revolving around budget restraints according to MTCC officials. With this, the airport development project is still continuing in as the new administration has taken over in 2024.

The latest updates of the airport give some hope into the project being completed soon, as MTCC is now predicting that the development will be completed by July 26, 2024.

Nevertheless, we have now begun efforts to complete work to the level where aircraft can land at the airport by July 26 this year. It has been about a month since work has resumed. The target is to commence operations of this airport on July 26 - Official from MTCC

As the corporation works to develop and handover the completed airport to the Government within this year, the new airport is sure to bring some much anticipated air connectivity to Meemu Atoll!
