2023 is proving to be yet another successful year of tourism for the Maldives as the country is now close to a million tourist arrivals.
While many expected the tourism industry to take a downward spiral following the COVID-19 pandemic, Maldives became one of the first destinations to re-open allowing tourists to visit the country. With the successful and well-thought-out plan, Maldives was able to re-open and get the tourism industry back on track successfully, reaching the tourist arrival goal even in 2019.
Becoming the visitor hot-spot, especially for Indian celebrities since the COVID-19 pandemic, the Maldives set an arrival goal of 1.8 million for the year 2023, as the nation has been doing extremely well since then. The start of 2023 marked the success of the coming months as the arrivals rates were extremely positive, leading to the country’s Ministry of Tourism setting the ambitious goal of 1.8 million arrivals.
While it might have seemed like an unrealistic goal, as half the year is over, and the month of July starts, the Maldives is extremely close to reaching the goal with the arrival rates 14 percent better compared to 2022.
With these positive arrival rates, the Tourism Ministry of the Maldives is expecting the country to reach the million mark within the month of July. So far this year, the highest arrivals were from India and Russia. These two markets have been at the top of the arrivals in the Maldives since the country opened up after the COVID-19 pandemic.
