While
everyone looks forward to enjoying the fun activities that the festive season
brings, there is an additional piece of happiness that the tourism industry
staff get during the season. Call it a little holiday gift if you may, but the
service charge earned during the last few months of a year is usually the
highlight of the year for many industry staff who earn a little more than usual
due to the increased visitor rates.
With
tourist properties being legally obligated to pay 10 percent of their total
revenues as service charge to their employees, it is no surprise that during
the months of December / January, the industry staff in the Maldives look
forward to their payday.
As hotels and resorts earn more - as the festive season
usually means full occupancy in almost every single Maldives resort, they also
manage to generate better revenue than other months of the year. And with
better revenues hotels and resorts are able to pay their staff increased service
charges as well.
This
year, employees from one of the largest guest house operators in the Maldives,
Kaani Hotels in Maafushi got quite the upgrade from
the usual service charge given in the hotel industry as the company paid a total of USD 75,600 in service charge to its 180 staff.
Each staff working at Kaani Hotels received USD 420 (MVR 6,476) for December 2022, and broke a record as the Hotel in Maafushi managed to match the service charge paid by some of the resorts in the
Maldives, paying a higher service charge than any guest house property has paid
their staff in the Maldives.
Speaking
on this record-breaking payout, the chairman of Kaani Hotel noted that the
company’s earnings had started to significantly improve in the last two months,
making the business more successful than pre-COVID-19. While Kaani has already
gained major traction due to this high payout, the company's chairman has also
noted that the company is expecting the service charge to be even better in the
coming month.
Kaani
Hotels recently also celebrated its 10-year anniversary on 9th December 2022,
where they focused heavily on the hard work that the Kaani staff put into
making the property the success it is today.
