Due to its proximity, amazing cuisine, and the list of sights that one can visit at an affordable price, Sri Lanka has become one of the most travelled destinations by Maldivians. Whether it is for a short trip of a few days or plans to migrate to another country, many Maldivians’ first choice ends up being the neighbouring country Sri Lanka.

For those who plan to take their trips to Sri Lanka, the top choice of airline always ends up being Sri Lankan airlines, which offers direct flights from Velana International Airport of the Maldives to Bandaranaike International, Colombo. While the prices may vary depending on the season, if tickets are booked early on, the prices are budget-friendly for the short trip of one and a half hours.

Sri Lankan airlines is also the only budget-friendly option available for visitors looking to fly from the Maldives to Sri Lanka and vice-versa as the next best option available is Emirates airlines, which many consider being a bit more of a luxurious airline.  However, this might be changing with the recent announcement that FitsAir will be hosting flights between the Maldives and Sri Lanka.

The airline is scheduled to start operating flights every Monday, Tuesday and Thursday starting October 10, 2022.  And while this airline might be new to carrying passengers between the Maldives and Sri Lanka, FitsAir has been carrying out cargo operations between the two countries since 1997, making the Maldives one of the first destinations the airline started its operations in.

The airline is known to be the second international airline in Sri Lanka as well as the first privately operated Sri Lankan Airline to be licensed for international cargo operations by the Sri Lankan Civil Aviation Authority (CAA).

This is an exciting announcement to many as the introduction of an additional airline operating flights between Sri Lanka and the Maldives, many might be looking for further price competition and hopefully more affordable ticket prices for the upcoming December holidays!
