Eydhafushi is set to be transformed into a new urban hub with a housing project
This housing initiative is part of the broader vision to establish Eydhafushi as an urban centre, with robust infrastructure and services to support a growing population.
As the Maldives progresses towards a more urbanized lifestyle, the demand for development projects, particularly urban housing, has seen a sharp rise. Recognising this need, the government has been actively working on initiatives to foster urban living while simultaneously enhancing urban tourism opportunities. These efforts are aimed at not only catering to locals but also positioning urban centres as vibrant hubs for travellers.
While the Greater Malé Area, especially Hulhumalé, continues its evolution into a bustling urban space, another island poised for a similar transformation is Baa Atoll Eydhafushi.
The Maldivian government has announced an ambitious housing project for Eydhafushi, which will see the development of 1,000 flats. This initiative is part of the broader vision to establish Eydhafushi as an urban centre, with robust infrastructure and services to support a growing population.
Awarded to the Chinese construction company Sinohydro, the project entails the construction of 12 15-storey residential towers. These will comprise 336 three-bedroom flats and 672 two-bedroom flats, designed to cater to the diverse needs of families and professionals.
This development promises to address the housing needs of locals while offering a modern living experience in one of the Maldives’ most picturesque regions.
As Eydhafushi is located in Baa Atoll, a premier tourist destination known for its UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, the housing project also holds strategic importance for the tourism industry. Many resort employees from Baa Atoll are expected to benefit from these new residential opportunities, reducing the logistical challenges of daily commutes and enhancing their quality of life.
By combining urban housing with strategic tourism support, this project serves as a blueprint for future initiatives aimed at balancing local development with the Maldives’ global tourism aspirations.
