The past few days in the Maldives have been marked with the words ‘suspended’, ‘dismissed’, or ‘resigned’. Although people were not expecting one resignation or dismissal after another, it appears that something is shifting in the air as there have been multiple dismissals and resignations in the Maldives.
It all started with the resignation of Aisha Nurain Janah, who was serving as the Chairperson for the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations (MMPRC). Although Nurain had recently gained recognition in the Maldives for her ability to capture an audience with her ability to articulate her points in an amazing manner, in a shocking turn of events Nurain’s resignation from her post was confirmed by local media outlets of the Maldives. The resignation comes after Nurain had also done extensive interviews with local news outlets, stating her aim to restructure and rebrand MMPRC. Although this resignation was unexpected due to her rising popularity in the industry, the resignation did not come quietly as media outlets and citizens were quick to speculate why Nurain had resigned from her role in MMPRC. With this, the Maldives Government as well as MMPRC received major criticism from all directions.
Shortly after the resignation, local news media made yet another shocking announcement stating that the Managing Director of MMPRC Fathmath Thaufeeq (Kudy) has been dismissed from her position in the company. Although the dismissal has not been announced officially by any Government bodies, local media outlets have been reporting this announcement as well. With this, no media outlet has been able to speculate why Thaufeeq has been dismissed from her role in the company.
While these were the two main dismissals and resignation news that marked the headlines of the Maldives news in the past few days, there have been a few more dismissals as well. This includes the Deputy Minister of Sports, Fitness, and Recreation, Hussain Shifaz who has been suspended from his position for misconduct. According to Ismail Azmeen from the Ministry of Public Relations, Shifaz has been placed under indefinite suspension by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu for violating the Code of Ethics for Political Appointees. He is, however, not the first Minister to get dismissed from a ministry, as earlier this year three ministers from the Ministry of Youth Malsha Shareef, Mariyam Shiuna, and Abdulla Mahzoon Maajid, had also been suspended following derogatory comments aimed at India and their Prime Minister.
In addition to this, the Chairman of the Housing Development Corporation (HDC) Ahmed Zuhoor has also been dismissed from his position. While local news media have reported this news, the reasoning for his dismissal has also not been revealed yet. In addition to Zuhoor, Deputy Minister at the Ministry of Dhivehi Language, Culture and Heritage Mohamed Saeed Moosa Wajdhee has also been reportedly dismissed from his position with the reasoning yet to be stated by any Governing bodies.
