The Ministry of Climate Change, Environment, and Energy has announced a special event titled "Traditional Knowledge for Future Resilience", which is to be held on 13 June 2026 at the MNU Business School as part of World Environment Day 2026 activities.

The event is being hosted in collaboration with the Male' Water and Sewerage Company Pvt. Ltd.(MWSC), UNICEF Maldives, and the Maldives National University (MNU). Scheduled from 4:00 PM to 5:30 PM, the session will bring together elders with traditional knowledge, contemporary researchers, and young participants to discuss the role of indigenous practices in building resilience for the future.

The event will adopt a combination of a panel discussion and an informal "Holhuashi" or "Sip and Talk" format, creating an interactive environment for knowledge sharing and dialogue.

According to the organisers, the discussion will focus on comparing traditional practices with modern approaches while examining their relevance to future environmental and societal resilience.

The session will cover four key areas: celestial navigation, traditional sustainable fisheries practices, modern technologies, and the relationship between these fields and future resilience.

Elders with experience and knowledge in these areas will share insights from past practices, while researchers will provide perspectives on current developments and applications. A youth moderator will facilitate the discussion, helping to connect traditional knowledge with contemporary challenges and future opportunities.

The event aims to highlight the value of traditional knowledge systems and encourage dialogue on how they can contribute to sustainable development and resilience in the years ahead.
