The Ministry of Tourism and Environment has announced that a solar–diesel–battery hybrid power system comprising 250 kWp of solar photovoltaic (PV) capacity and a 537 kWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) is currently being installed in B.Fehendhoo to enhance energy reliability, grid stability, and reduce dependence on diesel fuel.

The announcement was made by the Ministry on 14 January 2025. According to the Ministry, once operational, this initiative will significantly reduce the island’s reliance on diesel, saving 117,697 litres of diesel annually and reducing emissions by 288 tonnes each year.

The Ministry further noted that this marks an important milestone on the pathway to H.E. Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s vision of achieving 33 percent of electricity generation through renewable sources by 2028. In addition to taking a step forward in bringing the President's vision to life, this is also a major step forward in the Maldives' vision to becoming more sustinable. In recent years, the Maldives has slowly started taking different measures in order to create a more eco-friendly culture.

Some of the note-worthy measures include the segregation of waste in households and the measures being taken to reduce single-use plastic in the country.
