The Ministry of Tourism and Environment (MoTmv) has announced a historic milestone as the BBNJ Treaty enters into force.

The BBNJ Treaty is the first legally binding global agreement to protect biodiversity in the high seas areas of the ocean outside any country's control by creating marine protected areas, assessing environmental impacts, sharing benefits from marine resources, and helping countries work together.

With this treaty the Maldives can now take steps towards:

  • Protection for biodiversity in the high seas
  • Ensure fair and equitable benefit sharing
  • Support the creation of marine protected areas
  • Strengthen global cooperation

Additionally, the BBNJ Treaty is also vital for climate, food security, and ecosystems.

In their statement, the Ministry of Tourism and Environment stated that the Maldives proudly celebrates this milestone in ocean governance, reaffirming Maldives' commitment to marine conservation, including safeguarding biodiversity, advancing equitable benefit-sharing, establishing and strengthening marine protected areas, and protecting ocean ecosystems through strong multilateral cooperation for a sustainable future.
