The Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company Ltd ( MIFCO) opened its latest retail outlet in Hulhumale Phase II on 15 September 2022. With the introduction of the new outlet eight types of canned fish, six types of ready-to-eat meals and a large number of fish products will be available in this store, as MIFCO is still working on getting a more prominent outlet in order to bring in more products to keep up with the high demand the store will get from those who reside in Phase II.
With tuna and tuna products being the main ingredient in almost all Maldivian cuisines, the usage of tuna in everyday meals is a big part of the Maldivian culture. Everything from breakfast to dinner, including short eats made for tea-time, comprises mainly of tuna being cooked in different methods to bring out a variety of flavours to the food palette.
Due to this, it has become a need in every Maldivian household that mainly eats Maldivian cuisine to have tuna products on hand at all times, as many have become used to buying tuna cans in bulk and storing them at the start of each month.
This practice is widespread during festive seasons such as Ramadan and other public holidays as Maldivians prepare a variety of dishes that heavily use tuna, making it a necessity. Ease of access to tuna has become increasingly important for most Maldivian households.
While phase II still has major ways to go on the development - as stores are yet to open in the area, the introduction of the new MIFCO outlet surely brings joy to the residents of Phase II.
Since the introduction of MIFCO in 1993, MIFCO transformed the Maldivian fishing industry and how Maldivians eat tuna with the introduction of a variety of products that slowly made their way into the Maldivian cuisine, making it the most reliable source for tuna products among many.
