The death of 10-year-old Fathimath Mishka Mohamed on 2nd June raised concerns on potential negligence by health authorities. Minister of Health Ahmed Naseem, after a review, admitted to negligence and response failures. He announced changes and improvements to HEOC operations, the establishment of a 24/7 OPD service as well as changes in emergency response mechanisms.
During the recent surge, the sample positivity rate stood at 30 percent. With the number of cases declining this week, the positivity rate currently stands at 27 percent. The government has since announced its target of reducing he positivity rate to 5 percent, with current restrictions in place to continue till then.
Dr. Nazla Rafeeq, speaking at the press conference on 08 June, encouraged the public to comply with the measures enforced to stop the spread of the virus. The HPA announced that the second doze of Covishield vaccines can be administered within a 6-month period, as recommended by the MTAGI.
The Maldives have established 06 vaccination centers and 2 mobile teams in the Greater Male’ Area and 193 vaccination centers in atolls. In collaboration with local TV Channels, HPA has launched a new program ‘Haalubelun’, where medical doctors and public health experts answer citizen's questions.
