Weekly COVID-19 update: 3 – 9 June 2021

The death of 10-year-old Fathimath Mishka Mohamed on 2nd June raised concerns on potential negligence by health authorities.  Minister of Health Ahmed Naseem, after a review, admitted to negligence and response failures. He announced changes and improvements to HEOC operations, the establishment of a 24/7 OPD service as well as changes in emergency response mechanisms. 

During the recent surge, the sample positivity rate stood at 30 percent. With the number of cases declining this week, the positivity rate currently stands at 27 percent. The government has since announced its target of reducing he positivity rate to 5 percent, with current restrictions in place to continue till then. 

Dr. Nazla Rafeeq, speaking at the press conference on 08 June, encouraged the public to comply with the measures enforced to stop the spread of the virus. The HPA announced that the second doze of Covishield vaccines can be administered within a 6-month period, as recommended by the MTAGI.

The Maldives have established 06 vaccination centers and 2 mobile teams in the Greater Male’ Area and 193 vaccination centers in atolls. In collaboration with local TV Channels, HPA has launched a new program ‘Haalubelun’, where medical doctors and public health experts answer citizen's questions.

09 June 2021

Updates of COVID-19 cases.

  • 15,621 active cases, 69,213 cases in total recorded as at 9 June 2021
  •  341 new cases, 160 cases from Greater Male’ area and 153 cases from inhabited islands.
  • Death toll at 191. 
  • National sample positivity rate declining, government targets to bring it down by 5%.

08 June 2021

Updates of COVID-19 cases.

  • 17,461 active cases, 68,872 cases in total recorded as at 8 June 2021
  • 370 new cases, 217 cases from Greater Male’ area and 148 cases from inhabited islands.   Death toll at 189.   
  • Restrictive measures enforced on May 26 extended for another one week. 
  • 24/7 OPD clinics established in Male’, Hulhumale and Villimale.   
  • Services of HMF strengthened - 204 nurses and specialist physician consultations available round the clock.  
  • A student loan moratorium announced from June to December 2021.  
  • Current positivity rate at 27%.

07 June 2021

Updates of COVID-19 cases.

  • 18,462 active cases, 68,502 cases in total recorded as at 7 June 2021. 
  • 552 new cases, 271 cases from Greater Male’ area and 249 cases from inhabited islands. 
  • Death toll at 187. 
  • 76 islands under monitoring. 
  • Two new vaccines approved by MFDA: Janssen and Moderna. 
  • HPA allows councils to overtake the responsibility of assessing essential travel from one island to another. 
  • If travelling to islands for essential reasons, must complete 14 days quarantine period.

05 June 2021

Updates of COVID-19 cases.

  • 590 new cases – 389 from Greater Male’ area, 195 from inhabited islands. 
  • Total 67,538 number of cases, 191 hospitalized, 20,014 active cases, 47,333 recoveries and 182 deaths till date.  
  • Vaccinated - 100 people received first doze and 188 people received second doze. 

03 June 2021

Updates of COVID-19 cases.

  • 648 new cases – 349 from Greater Male’ area, 270 from inhabited islands.  
  • Total 66,516 number of cases, 213 hospitalized, 22,375 active cases, 43,959 recoveries and 173 deaths till date. 
  • Vaccinated - 429 people received first doze and 1,216 people received second doze. 76 islands under monitoring. 
  • Investigation of potential oversight in death of 10-year-old patient ongoing. 
  • FAM building in Male’ to be converted as triage facility.
