When looking for a country to live in or even travel to for a vacation, no matter how short, one thing we all subconsciously check for is cleanliness because no matter how beautiful a destination may be, if it has been trashed and not cleaned up, it loses its actual value.

The same can be said regarding the Maldives, as people often visit the country for its beautiful beaches. And while this illusion of a clean white sandy beach that looks like it's from a dream might be true when it comes to resorts, now that tourists have started exploring beyond resorts and have started travelling to local islands, visitors can see the state of some of the beaches in the Maldives. With no dedicated staff to clean up after everyone's mess, we are all responsible for our own trash and people often cannot be bothered to hold on to things until they find a trash bin.

This does not only apply to beaches - as trash that is carelessly thrown away can be spotted on roadsides. And while the cleaners from the Waste Management Corporation Limited (WAMCO) do a marvellous job of cleaning up the cities, it only takes a few hours and a few hundred people to trash the city yet again.

Whether it is due to the lack of awareness or lack of public trash bins, throwing trash where it does not belong has become a bad habit that is ruining the beauty of the Maldives.

However, this issue does not solely apply to the Maldives, as most cities around the globe face similar issues with trashing leading to an annual global social action program aimed at combating the global solid waste problem being celebrated known as ‘ the world clean up day’.

This year’s world clean-up day is set to be carried out on the 17th of September 2022, and in celebration of this day in the Maldives,  Housing Development Corporation (HDC) has planned to carry out a mass clean-up of Hulhumale’. Set to be the biggest clean-up event that is going to be carried out in the Maldives so far, Government offices,  State Owned Enterprises and other organisations are also encouraged to join, as the community effort is needed in order to keep the beautiful islands of the Maldives clean.

While World Clean-up Day is only one day a year, it is up to all of us to ensure that cleanliness is maintained in our daily lives, whether we are in our own space or a shared space because the trash we throw on the beach without thinking causes major pollution. Holding on to what you need to throw away until you find a trashcan is your moral responsibility to mother nature.
