On 11 May 2025, the Ministry of Tourism and Environment signed a contract with Wee Hour Investment Pvt Ltd for the design and construction of an Interim Hazardous Waste Storage Facility in Raa Atoll, Vandhoo. This project is being carried out within the Regional Waste Management Facility.
The development and design of the Interim Hazardous Waste Storage Facility was signed under a design-and-build contract— scheduled to be completed within 10 months. Signed to be developed for MVR18.5 million, this project will enhance the safe disposal of waste within Raa Atoll. This project aligns with the Maldives’ objective of a proper waste disposal initiative. The country has recently intensified its commitment to sustainable waste management, aligning with its broader environmental protection goals.
This initiative is one among several significant steps the Maldivian government has undertaken recently. In March 2025, the government awarded contracts for the development and upgrading of waste management centres on 109 islands. This extensive program, described as the administration's largest and most comprehensive, aims to establish sustainable and efficient waste management systems across the nation, particularly in the outer islands. Additionally, there have also been Island-Specific Waste Management Projects that will oversee the construction of waste management centres on islands such as Himandhoo, Thoddoo, Feridhoo, and Kaashidhoo. The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and The Coca-Cola Foundation introduced six specialised waste collection vehicles, including two electric vehicles, in March 2024. This initiative aims to enhance recycling rates and reduce environmental degradation.
The most recent project in Raa Atoll aligns with the government's move to provide a safe, centralized location for hazardous waste collection before it is exported for eco-friendly disposal.
