The Maldives has recently hiked up its effort to become a more sustainable and green nation in order to maintain the natural beauty of the country for generations to come. Maldives has always been at the forefront of climate change discussions as the low-lying country is constantly under threat of damages caused by to rise in sea levels. While the much-needed steps towards a greener future were not taken in the past, in recent years efforts have hiked up with the ban of major single-use plastic products as well as educating the public on choosing more sustainable resources in their day-to-day life.

And now, the Maldives is taking yet another major step towards changing day-to-day life to more eco-friendly with the possibility of introducing a bike-sharing scheme in Hulhumale’. Hulhumale’ city, which is the upcoming and more sustainable hub when it comes to the Greater Male’ Area will see a major change in how people choose to travel with the bike-sharing scheme. While it is no secret that motorbikes, cars and other motorized vehicles cause major harm to our ecosystem and planet, the Maldives is packed with these vehicles. As people often choose bikes and cars as the main form of transportation to get from one place to the other, even with the introduction of public transportation in recent times, the need for a greener change has been necessary for a better environmental development in the transportation sector.

The project, which is set to be launched soon is a part of the Government’s efforts to reduce toxic emissions into the atmosphere. With this, the bike-sharing scheme will introduce a 100-electric pedal-assisted or battery-powered bicycle, which is set to be handed over to the Housing Development Corporation (HDC).

Very soon, we will sign an agreement with HDC to bring these bikes under the program.
Minister of Climate Change, Environment, and Energy Thoriq Ibrahim.

With this, people can choose to rent the bike for a certain rate and choose to travel within the city while also being more mindful.
