Born between 1996 and 2010, Generation Z is the second youngest, after Millennials and before Alpha. As the first true digital natives, their identity is defined by growing up with the internet. Their perspectives are also shaped by climate anxiety, financial shifts, and the COVID-19 pandemic.

Gen Z's growing influence makes their perspectives crucial for shaping the future of nations. However, older generations, currently in leadership, often misunderstand their values and communication, hindering collaboration. Therefore, current leaders need to be open and actively learn about Gen Z's unique experiences. As Gen Z increasingly takes on leadership roles, their input is essential for creating relevant and effective policies that address evolving national needs, making intergenerational understanding key for inclusive and forward-thinking progress in any country.

Bridging the gap: Reaching and resonating with Gen Z

To truly connect with Gen Z, Gen X, and Y must move beyond assumptions and actively immerse themselves to understand the intricacies of their values, perspectives, and experiences. This necessitates direct engagement with Gen Zs, approaching conversations with open and genuine curiosity to learn from their viewpoints. Furthermore, older generations should proactively consume Gen Z media and online content to grasp their cultural references and emerging trends.  

Thus, to cultivate a more inclusive and progressive nation, it is also imperative to develop comprehensive national strategies to deepen the understanding and foster meaningful engagement with Gen Zs. Substantial government funding should be allocated towards in-depth research initiatives that examine Gen Z's varying needs, aspirations, values, and challenges across diverse socioeconomic backgrounds and geographic locations. This evidence-based approach will provide crucial data to inform the development of targeted policies, tailored programs, and effective resource allocation designed to address their specific concerns and empower their potential. For example, the European Union conducts regular "Eurobarometer" surveys that include specific questions targeting young people's opinions on various social, economic, and political issues across member states, providing a broad understanding of Gen Z attitudes in Europe. Another example is Youthopia from Singapore, which is a digital platform and initiative by the National Youth Council (NYC) of Singapore. Youthopia is a key part of Singapore's national strategy to understand and engage Gen Z and other young people by providing them with relevant information, opportunities for participation, and a platform to connect and be heard.

Similarly, the establishment of inclusive national dialogues and interactive forums that bring together individuals from across the generational spectrum is vital. These platforms will serve as crucial spaces for open and respectful communication, facilitating mutual learning and actively working to dismantle harmful stereotypes and bridge potential intergenerational divides. By fostering direct interaction and shared conversations on overarching national goals and challenges, these forums can cultivate a sense of collective purpose and understanding. For example, the Finnish National Youth Council and Youth Sector serve as Finland's national youth council, with a core purpose of strengthening youth involvement in policymaking. This is achieved through three main objectives: promoting equal opportunities for young people combating social exclusion, and empowering young people with the necessary tools and skills to actively participate in and influence the creation of policy.

Recognizing Gen Z as digital natives in an increasingly interconnected world is also crucial. Therefore, significant and sustained investment in robust digital infrastructure, regardless of location or socioeconomic status, is essential. This ensures equitable access to vital information, educational and economic opportunities, and platforms for civic engagement, enabling Gen Z to fully participate in the digital age and contribute to the nation's digital transformation. For example, Estonia has prioritized digital literacy from a young age, ensuring Gen Z has the skills to participate in the digital economy and engage with online government services. Their "e-Estonia" initiatives aim to make digital interaction seamless for all citizens.

Furthermore, actively providing healthy support for youth-led initiatives and platforms through dedicated funding mechanisms, mentorship opportunities, and access to necessary resources is essential. This empowers Gen Z to become active agents of change, to shape their own futures, and to contribute their unique perspectives, innovative ideas, and entrepreneurial spirit to national development. Recognizing and amplifying their voices and leadership potential is a critical investment in the nation's future. For example, the UK’s Youth Select Committee (YSC) is a National Youth Agency initiative, supported by the House of Commons. The 12 committee members are aged 14-18 and include representatives of young people involved in various programmes and groups across England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. The YSC receives induction training and mentoring from parliamentary Clerks and National Youth Agency staff. They examine and report on issues relevant to their peers, holding inquiries and making recommendations to the government.

Finally, the launch of well-designed and impactful nationwide public awareness campaigns focused on proactively promoting intergenerational understanding, fostering empathy, and encouraging meaningful collaboration is necessary. These campaigns can utilize various media channels to highlight the shared values and complementary strengths of different generations. This aims to challenge age-related biases and cultivate a more cohesive and harmonious society where the diverse experiences and perspectives of all age groups are valued, respected, and effectively leveraged for collective progress and national advancement.

Ultimately, to effectively engage Gen Z is not merely a matter of understanding a new demographic, but a fundamental necessity for the future prosperity and inclusivity of nations worldwide, including the Maldives. Their perspectives are invaluable in navigating the complexities of the modern world. This collaborative approach will ensure that Gen Z's energy, innovation, and values are not only understood but are actively woven into the policymaking process, paving the way for truly representative and forward-thinking progress for all generations.
