During a ceremony hosted on the sidelines of the Blue Planet Alliance Fellowship Programme in Honolulu, Hawaii on 19 May 2025, the Maldivian Government and the Blue Planet Alliance (BPA) signed a non-binding agreement. The agreement was signed by His Excellency Vice President Uz Hussain Mohamed Latheef on behalf of the Maldives, and Henk Rogers, Founder of the Blue Planet Alliance on behalf of the organisation.
The Blue Planet Alliance is an organisation that was established in 2020 by leading climate change solutions advocate Henk Rogers. The organisation was created with a mission to get islands and countries around the world to legislatively mandated a commitment to 100 percent renewable energy by 2045. According to the company's website, BPA is working with governments, businesses, and individuals to help grow a global movement aimed at reducing the negative impact on the planet, thus aligning human behavior more in harmony with nature.
Giving details about the agreement, the President’s Offices’ official website states that the Blue Planet Climate Agreement' acknowledged the critical significance of renewable energy and reiterated the Maldives' dedication to achieving its ambitious renewable energy goals in the context of sustainable development, supported and enabled through assistance from the international community. Additionally it also states that the agreement further acknowledged the Maldives as an official member of the Blue Planet Alliance, with both parties agreeing to collaborate in promoting and advancing the implementation of renewable energy.
Prior to the signing of the non-binding agreement, during his official visit to Hawaii, the Vice President also attended the opening ceremony of the Blue Planet Alliance Fellowship Programme. During his speech as a special guest at the ceremony, the Vice President highlighted the unique vulnerabilities of small island nations like the Maldives, where the climate crisis has now become a lived reality. Despite the challenges, he stressed the Maldives' continued commitment to climate leadership.
Framing the obstacles faced by small islands as catalysts for innovation, the Vice President praised the Blue Planet Alliance Fellowship Programme as a vital platform where island nations can share knowledge, develop innovative solutions, and coordinate global climate action.
