On 14 May 2025, the Housing Development Corporation (HDC) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Ministry of Tourism and Environment to develop and operate a green nursery in Hulhumale’ Phase II under the Chinese grant assistance. This greenhouse is being developed as part of the President and the First Lady’s 5 million tree planting program – which was inaugurated on 5 June 2024 on the occasion of World Environment Day.
The agreement for the green nursery was signed by the Minister of Tourism and Environment, Thoriq Ibrahim, on behalf of the government, and HDC’s Managing Director, Mohamed Mauroof Jameel, on behalf of the company.
With the development and successful establishment of the greenhouse, the government will be one step closer to the Presidential pledge to plant five million trees across the Maldives. This pledge was announced by President Muizzu at COP28, as a commitment by the Government to safeguard the Maldives’ fragile ecological systems and mitigate the impact of climate change for the benefit of the current and future generations.
In addition to fulfilling the Presidential pledge, this initiative will also contribute to making Hulhumale’ a greener space for its residents to enjoy.
