One of the biggest challenges when starting up or even running any small business is the cost of the business. In every single stage of a business, from creation to development, a business requires a good sum of finances as well as support from the community.

In the Maldives, start-ups and some impactful small businesses started taking off during the pandemic. Everything from stitching and baking to meal preps became small businesses run from home through the help of social media.

However, during the recovery phase of COVID-19, several small businesses in local islands found a golden opportunity to set up shop and start making  a good profit as the visitor arrivals in the Maldives skyrocketed and guests were finally looking to visit Maldivian islands rather than sticking to resort visits.

One such small business that started up and really took off in the Maldives is Baaba Gadiya in Gn.Fuvahmulah. This one-man food truck or ‘Gadiya’ that started out in 2021 with a small variety of Maldivian short eats really took off due to its popularity among locals and tourist alike.

With the addition of food and drink choices increasing as Baabaa Gadiya developed, the popularity among the community also took off — making this food truck a ‘must visit’ on any trip to Fuvahmulah.

The four-wheeled, red coloured food truck marked with the brand logo has surely come a long way since the inception of the one-man food truck, however, one of the biggest marks of developments to Baaba Gadiya has been the addition of a solar panel to the food truck, giving the brand an eco-friendly and sustainable touch.

The food truck is one step closer to becoming more sustainable and environmentally friendly - from the solar panel that was granted by the Fenaka Corporation in honour of World Energy Day on October 21, 2022.

This grant will enable the food truck to produce power to maintain all of its daily operations, including making iced drinks and cooking food.

While Baaba Gadiya is good start - with the only small business that was gifted a solar panel on this World Energy Day, supporting other businesses to do the same will definitely ensure the Maldives moves towards its sustainability goal even faster.
