On 20 June 2026, the Velana Airport announced the arrival of the one millionth visitor to the Maldives.
In their post, Velana Airport announced the welcoming of Almudena Esparza from Spain as the traveller who made history as the Maldives' one millionth visitor for 2026.
With the arrival of the one millionth visitor, the Minister of Tourism and Civil Aviation has also noted that the Maldives is expecting to record higher arrivals for the second half of 2026, with the daily arrivals now exceeding 5,000 visitors.
Each year, the Maldives expects a higher arrival at the end of the year, as the Maldives welcomes more arrivals during its peak seasons; the festive season. This year, the Maldives has set a target f 2.5 million tourist arrivals. However, by mid-year the country has not welcomed even half of the targetted arrivals, mainly due to the major disruptions in travel due to the unrest in the Middle East.
