Island Aviation Services Ltd. (IASL) has officially signed an agreement to commence the Maafaru International Airport Terminal Building Extension Project, marking the next phase in the airport’s continued development following the recent completion of its runway and major infrastructure upgrades.
The project has been awarded to Hunan No.6 Engineering Co., Ltd, as the main contractor, with Gedor Consulting Private Limited appointed as the consultant. Scheduled for completion within 10 months, the terminal extension will introduce a two-storey structure, significantly expanding the existing terminal footprint.
The new extension will feature an expanded arrival hall, a dedicated CIP lounge, and enhanced first-floor facilities, including a passenger lounge and additional office spaces. Once completed, the project will increase passenger-handling capacity and further strengthen the airport’s role as a key international gateway connecting the northern Maldives to the world.
This development follows the recently completed runway expansion project, which extended the runway to 2,850 metres, enabling the airport to accommodate wide-body aircraft. The expanded aircraft parking area also enhances the airport’s capacity to handle business jets, scheduled and charter operations.
Together, these developments reinforce both the airside and landside operations of Maafaru International Airport, positioning it as a strategic aviation hub serving the northern atolls. The project also contributes to regional development and sustainable tourism growth.
Since its opening in 2019, Maafaru International Airport has generated employment opportunities and continues to deliver broad economic benefits as operations expand. With its Jet A-1 fuel farm and dedicated seaplane dock, the airport plays an increasingly vital role in enhancing efficiency, connectivity, and supporting the growth of luxury tourism in the region.
The terminal expansion represents a significant milestone in IASL’s strategy to strengthen airport infrastructure and operational efficiency across its network, in alignment with the Government of Maldives’ national development vision to expand connectivity, improve service standards, and drive the long-term growth of air travel and tourism in the Maldives.
