In a unique and symbolic move, Velana International Airport (VIA) has announced that its long-awaited new terminal will officially open on Maldives’ 60th Independence Day, 26 July 2025. The decision to launch the new terminal on this significant national day marks a milestone not just for the airport, but for the nation’s progress in infrastructure and tourism.

The VIA expansion project, originally signed in 2016, is one of the most ambitious and eagerly anticipated developments in the country—second only to the landmark Sinamalé Bridge project. Over the years, the expansion has come to represent the Maldives' commitment to elevating its global connectivity and enhancing the experience for millions of travellers who visit the island nation each year.

The new terminal is expected to bridge the gap between the Maldives and international travellers by vastly improving the quality of airport services. Currently, Velana International Airport faces considerable challenges, especially during peak tourist seasons when thousands of visitors arrive simultaneously. The resulting congestion often pushes the airport to its operational limits, leading to delays, discomfort, and logistical difficulties for both tourists and staff.

With the opening of the new terminal, these issues are expected to be significantly reduced. The upgraded facilities will increase capacity and streamline passenger flow, offering a smoother and more welcoming arrival and departure experience—aligned with the Maldives’ reputation as a premier luxury travel destination.

To mark the countdown to this transformative moment, the Managing Director of Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), Ibrahim Shareef, officially inaugurated a countdown event on 21 June 2025. This countdown will run until 26 July, culminating in the dual celebration of the terminal’s opening and the country’s 60th year of independence.
