With the holiday season drawing closer, Maldives is starting to get ready to welcome thousands of travellers to spend their holidays in this tropical paradise. The last few months of the year and the first month of each new year are known to be the peak season for the Maldives, as travellers from all corners of the globe seek a tropical destination to escape the cold of the holiday season. These last few months also bring hope to the Maldives to reach the tourist arrival goal that the country sets yearly. With the Maldives paving the way to welcome 2 million tourists to the destination this year, the next two months will either bring enough tourists to close the gap between the 2 million and the 1,608,953 tourists this year or make it an unsuccessful year when it comes to reaching this goal.
As the country draws closer to welcoming the 2 million tourists, the recent developments in Noonu Maafaru Atoll prove to be a beacon of hope when it comes to attracting new visitors. Although the Noonu Atoll Maafaru Airport had halted international flights recently in order to expand the airport’s runway, following the expansion project, the airport has yet again resumed international flights. With the most recent upgrade, the runway has been developed from 2.2 kilometres to 2.8 kilometres - making it possible to accommodate Boeing 777-ER300 aircraft.
In addition to this, the apron expansion that was successfully completed at the airport will also allow Noonu Atoll Maafaru Airport to accommodate a higher number of jets. As the airport is closely located to several luxury airports, even prior to the apron and airport expansion, Noonu Atoll Maafaru Airport welcomes a high number of jets. With the recent upgrades, the airport will have a parking capacity for 26 jets, which is double the amount prior to the expansion.
