The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) signed an agreement with the Maldives National Planning, Housing and Infrastructure Ministry for the design and construction of an airport at Meemu Atoll Muli on 28 February 2021. Although the project was initially scheduled for completion within one year, development work on the airport officially began in 2022, with completion announced on 25 April 2025 following the successful landing of the first test flight.

Under the contract, the project scope included the reclamation of 14 hectares of land, 1,812 metres of coastal protection, and the construction of a 1,200-metre by 30-metre runway, complete with a taxiway and an apron. The total project value was MVR221.733 million. The contract was signed by former CEO of MTCC, Adam Azim, on behalf of the company, and former director general Ms. Fathimath Shaana Farooq on behalf of the government.

According to the Ministry of Construction and Infrastructure, the development work of Muli Airport has now reached full completion, and the test flight was successfully conducted by Maldivian.

With Meemu Atoll being primarily known for its vibrant coral reefs, manta ray cleaning stations, and pristine natural beauty, the successful development of an airport on the island of Muli is expected to significantly boost tourism in the atoll. The new airport will enhance accessibility for both domestic and international travelers, promote economic development, and provide new opportunities for local businesses and communities. It marks a major step forward in the Maldives' broader efforts to decentralise tourism and bring sustainable growth to its outer atolls.
