Maldivian Airlines, the national carrier of the Maldives, is gearing up for an exciting chapter in its journey as it prepares to expand its operations to new international markets. The airline's upcoming acquisition of wide-body aircraft with a seating capacity of 275 passengers will enable direct flights to long-haul destinations, marking a significant milestone in its growth trajectory.

Currently, Maldivian operates flights to 17 domestic locations and three international destinations: India, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh. These operations have served as the backbone of the airline’s network, connecting travellers across the region. However, with the anticipated fleet expansion in 2025, the airline aims to broaden its horizons, catering to both leisure and business travellers seeking convenient access to far-reaching destinations.

During a recent address, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu highlighted the potential of Maldivian Airlines to connect the Maldives with an array of new international destinations. While specific routes are yet to be finalised, he hinted that the airline might soon establish links to prominent cities in China and Europe. These new routes are expected to boost tourism, a key pillar of the Maldivian economy, while also enhancing trade and cultural exchanges with these regions.

Transport Minister Mohamed Ameen also provided insights into the airline’s ambitious expansion plans during a press briefing in December 2023. According to local news media, it was revealed that Maldivian Airlines is possibly targeting three cities in China, Johannesburg in South Africa, and three major cities in Europe. If realized, these routes would position the airline as a competitive player in the global aviation market, offering travellers from around the world direct access to the idyllic Maldives.

This strategic expansion aligns with the government’s broader vision to enhance the Maldives' connectivity to the world. By tapping into new markets, Maldivian Airlines can attract a more diverse range of tourists, further solidifying the Maldives’ status as a top-tier travel destination. Additionally, the introduction of wide-body aircraft will improve the overall travel experience, offering passengers more comfort and convenience on long-haul journeys.
