Tourism is one of the biggest sectors in the Maldives, bringing in thousands of travellers to the small island nation each year. While tourism continues to flourish in the country, a major part of the industry still depends on the luxury resorts for which the Maldives has become well-known. Even beyond the resorts with their water bungalows, the Maldives has much to offer in various island destinations. As several destinations, such as Addu City are waiting to tap into their full potential when it comes to the tourism sector, it became a pledge by Dr Mohamed Muizzu to establish a bigger tourism sector in Addu City.
One of the ways that the island’s tourism sector was set to be targetted is through the establishment of 6,000 tourist beds which will also create an estimated 10,000 jobs in the City. In a move to turn this promise into a reality, early in 2024 the Addu City Council opened up bidding for investors. With this, the Government was allowing global investors to develop tourism facilities in the Addu Atoll Hithadhoo’s Eedhigali tourism zone. The bidding stated that land plots of 21,000 square meters were established within the zone, which allowed local as well as international investors to take the tourism industry in the beautiful city located in Southern Maldives to the next level.
In addition to this effort, the Addu City Council has also announced the official launching of the ‘Addu Tourism Brand’ on Friday, 25th October 2024. With this, more travellers will have the opportunity to explore the beauty and potential holidays that Addu City and Southern Maldives have to offer. This project, which has been in the works for some time now is being done in collaboration with Ankria Pvt Ltd, a brand development company that won the bid for the project. In collaboration, Ankara Pvt Ltd has worked on perfecting the branding for the destination, which will be unveiled at an event held at Canareef Resort, Maldives.
The collaboration efforts towards making this project a success also involved the support of resorts, guest houses and other tourism stakeholders in Addu City. In addition to the branding reveals as well as the start of the marketing efforts, the efforts towards the establishment of the tourism zones, as well as the integrated development of Hankede, and the introduction of coastal tourism on reclaimed islands, will also be revealed during the event.
