As the holy month of Ramadan approaches, a palpable sense of anticipation fills the air in the Maldives. Preparations for this sacred time are already underway, from the annual Ramadan clean-up to the bustling shopping for new utensils and household items. It's a period infused with spirituality and reflection, a time when Muslims worldwide devote themselves to patience, virtue, and closeness to Allah.
In the Maldives and other regions that adhere to Islamic teachings, the significance of Ramadan is reflected in various cultural and societal practices. One such observance is the adjustment of work hours, allowing individuals to allocate more time for prayer, introspection, and connection with loved ones. During this blessed month, shortened work hours offer a respite from the daily grind, facilitating a deeper engagement with religious rituals and community gatherings. It's a time when priorities shift, emphasizing spiritual nourishment and familial bonds over the demands of daily life.
With this, the Maldivian Government has made the official announcements for the working hours of civil servants from the hours of 09:00 to 13:00 hrs. With the first day of Ramadan expected to fall on March 11th, the Government has also announced that the moon sighting is expected to be hosted on March 10th.
The moon sighting is also an event which has gained cultural significance in the Maldives, often marked with friends, family and loved ones, as it marks the beginning of the holiest month in the Islamic calendar. The sighting of the new moon determines the start of Ramadan, signifying the period of fasting, prayer, and spiritual reflection for Muslims worldwide.
