President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that the airports in Sh. Milandhoo and Sh. Komandoo will be completed and operational within 30 months, marking a significant step forward in the Administration’s nationwide infrastructure development agenda.
The President made these announcements during his ongoing tour of inhabited islands in North Miladhunmadulu Atoll, where he met with residents and inaugurated several development projects.
While addressing residents of Milandhoo, President Muizzu outlined the full scope of the island’s airport development project — one of his key presidential pledges. The project includes 40 hectares of land reclamation, harbour development, and airport construction.
He noted that the reclamation works, contracted on Tuesday, are scheduled for completion within eight months. The full project, including harbour relocation and associated infrastructure, is targeted for completion and operationalisation within 30 months.
The President reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to strengthening Milandhoo’s harbour facilities to boost connectivity and economic activity.
During the visit, President Muizzu also attended groundbreaking ceremonies for the new police station, Islamic Centre, and hospital, and inaugurated the futsal pitch and volleyball court. Additionally, passport issuance services were launched on the island.
During a visit to Komandoo on Tuesday evening, President Muizzu confirmed that the Komandoo Airport will also be completed and operational within 30 months. The Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has been contracted to carry out both the reclamation and construction works.
Reclamation is set to be completed within eight months using state-of-the-art dredgers acquired through agreements with two internationally recognised companies. An 11,000-tonne dredger is expected to arrive by the end of October, followed by a 40,000-tonne dredger in mid-November for works in Rasmalé. A third dredger will arrive in December for immediate operations in HA. Dhidhdhoo, and after approximately three weeks, will be reassigned to Komandoo.
The President described the Komandoo Airport development as the most transformative initiative for the island’s future, underscoring its role in improving connectivity and driving socio-economic growth.
