MWSC explores underwater water production facility in Greater Malé

The Maldives Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) has begun studying the feasibility of establishing an underwater water production facility in the Greater Male' Region.

The basis of this feasibility is due to the limited land availability leading to increasing constraints on the development os conventional water plants in the area. According to the Managing Director of the company, Hussain Fahmy, with the establishment, the proposed facility would draw seawater from a depth of around 500 metres between Male' and Villingili. This project is progressing under a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed with a Norwegian expert team.

In addition to this project, Fahmy also revealed that MWSC is planning a separate project to supply water to Male' through the bridge that is currently being constructed between Male' and Thilafushi; an effort being pursued in collaboration with the Maldives' government. This plan aims to establish a water storage facility in Thilafushi, which will be brought into operation by the time the bridge is completed.

If the project is proven to be technically and financially viable, Fahmy states that the project could heavily reduce water production costs while providing a long-term solution to the shortage of land available for water plants in Malé.
