On 10 September 2025, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu announced the Government’s decision to amend the allowances and pensions granted to former presidents and former members of the People’s Majlis.

The President announced on a post shared on his official X account, which was reiterated by the official President's Office website. In his post, the President stated that the Government will submit legislative amendments to the People’s Majlis, aimed at eliminating certain privileges currently afforded to former presidents and former members of Parliament.

The President further emphasised that the Government is revising the relevant laws and regulations to bring pension entitlements in line with those of other Government retirees. He added that provisions will also be introduced to suspend pension payments during any period in which beneficiaries are re-employed in Government service.

These changes are being announced at a time when the world is seeing more frequent uprisings in countries, especially in Asia, where citizens are raising their voices against unjust benefits being received by politicians while citizens are burdened with high taxes, housing crises, and extremely high living costs all around the globe.

Countries such as Nepal, Indonesia, and Sri Lanka have already seen mass uprisings that have led to the fall of governments due to unfair benefits for politicians.
