As part of the ongoing efforts to strengthen and improve water security in the Greater Male' Region, MWSC has completed the installation of a 10,000-tonne water storage tank in Hulhumalé, which is now officially in operation.
The inauguration ceremony, held today at the MWSC Hulhumalé Operations Centre, was officiated by the Minister of Construction and Infrastructure, Dr. Abdullah Muththalib, together with MWSC Managing Director Abdul Matheen Mohamed. The event was attended by the MWSC Chairperson, members of the Board of Directors, senior management, and employees.
The 10,000-tonne water tank was constructed entirely through the expertise and craftsmanship of MWSC’s employees. This 24-meter-high tank is the largest ever built in the Maldives. Work on the structure began in September 2024, and its completion marks a significant milestone in the nation’s water security efforts.
With the inauguration of this tank, Hulhumale’s water storage capacity has increased to 22,600 tonnes, representing a 79 percent increase. The enhanced storage capacity is expected to improve water service reliability in Malé as well, especially with the temporary connection between Malé and Hulhumalé via the Sinamalé Bridge since February 2025. With this new storage tank, the total combined storage capacity of Malé and Hulhumalé will increase from 36,000 tonnes to 46,000 tonnes.
