The Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) has announced a call for research proposals under its MMA Research Fund, inviting applications for research grants, collaborative projects, and book grants. A total of MVR 1 million has been allocated to support high-quality, policy-relevant research that contributes to economic stability and informed policymaking in the Maldives.
The initiative aims to encourage innovative studies that enhance understanding of macroeconomic, financial, and development issues facing the country. Through this fund, the MMA seeks to foster collaboration among policymakers, academics, and researchers to generate insights that can guide national economic policy.
The call is open to independent researchers, academic institutions, think tanks, and MMA staff engaging in partnership with recognized research organizations. Independent grant applicants must hold at least a Master’s degree, while PhD-level researchers are strongly encouraged to apply. Collaborative projects, meanwhile, must be co-developed with MMA staff and demonstrate a clear alignment with the Authority’s strategic priorities.
In addition to research papers, the program includes a Book Grant category, open to individuals or teams with prior publications or equivalent experience. Books may be authored in Dhivehi or English, with preference given to works that promote financial literacy, deepen public understanding of the Maldivian economy, or contribute to policy debate.
Research proposals are welcome across a wide range of themes, including macroeconomic stability, monetary policy, financial sector resilience, climate and sustainability, digital finance and inclusion, economic diversification, Islamic finance, labour market trends, and education.
Selected projects will receive financial support to cover research-related expenses such as data collection, fieldwork, research assistance, and dissemination. Collaborative projects will also benefit from peer review opportunities, co-publication with MMA staff, and presentation platforms such as the MMA Research Conference.
Applications must be submitted electronically to [email protected] by 30 October 2025. Proposals will be reviewed by MMA’s Academic and Technical Review Committee, which will assess relevance, originality, feasibility, and potential policy impact. Successful applicants will be notified by 9 November 2025.
Further information, including detailed proposal requirements and application templates, are available on the Maldives Monetary Authority’s official website.
