Ministry of Foreign Affairs plants sixty trees at Hulhumalé Central Park to mark the World Environment Day

The event also commemorates sixty years of independence of the Maldives, and sixty years of the Maldives membership in the United Nations.

This tree planting initiative, held under the theme, “sixty trees for sixty years”, was led by the Minister of Foreign Affairs Iruthisham Adam together with the Minister of Climate Change, Environment and Energy Ali Shareef, the Managing Director of Housing Development Corporation Brigadier General (Retired) Ali Zuhair, and joined by the Resident Diplomatic Community, and the staff of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs

The event was held in support of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s 5 million trees planting initiative. The event also commemorates sixty years of independence of the Maldives, and sixty years of Maldives membership at the United Nations. 

Speaking at the event, Minister Iruthisham noted that the protection of the environment was an enduring and key pillar of the Maldives foreign policy and international engagement. Noting that climate change remains a present reality for the Maldives, she highlighted that a sustainable environment is essential for the protection of the Maldivian people, livelihoods, economy, and culture. She noted that President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s five million trees planting initiative contributes towards a more resilient and sustainable future. She further stated that the sixty trees planted would stand as a reminder of the shared collective responsibility to the environment and to the generations that will follow.

The Minister of Climate Change, Environment and Energy Ali Shareef also highlighted the importance of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s 5 million trees planting initiative towards the promotion of environmental sustainability and strengthening climate resilience across the Maldives.

Through the planting of sixty trees, the event raised awareness of the importance of green spaces and environmentally responsible practices, and six decades of Maldivian independence and engagement in the international stage.
