The Maldives is set to embrace digitalisation in its legislative processes, with plans to modernise the People’s Majlis by transitioning away from traditional handwritten documents and paperwork. This move aligns with the government’s broader initiative to digitise key sectors and improve efficiency in governance.
To facilitate this transition, the Maldives will receive technical support from India’s Lok Sabha, the lower house of its bicameral Parliament. The commitment was made by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla during an official visit to India by Maldives Parliament Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdulla. The visit, spanning four days, included a formal meeting between the two officials at the Lok Sabha premises on Tuesday. During the discussion, Speaker Abdulla requested technological assistance to digitise parliamentary resources in the Maldives, a request that was met with a positive response from Speaker Birla.
Beyond technical support, Birla also extended an invitation for the People’s Majlis to utilise the facilities of the Parliamentary Research and Training Institute for Democracies (PRIDE) under the Lok Sabha. This initiative aims to enhance the capacity of Maldivian legislators and parliamentary officials through specialised training programs.
The digitalisation of the Maldives Parliament marks a significant step in modernising governance and improving legislative efficiency. By leveraging India’s technological expertise, the People’s Majlis will be better equipped to streamline parliamentary procedures, enhance transparency, and improve accessibility to legislative resources.
