In recent years, more people have been talking about the need for proper measures to ensure a safe workplace for all employees. Although this discourse has taken the forefront on an international standard, the Maldives has also had to face some harsh realities regarding workplace safety. While the issues surrounding the unsafe workplaces that expatriate workers continue to face in the Maldives have always been an issue, in recent years, the stories have been strongly highlighted as more expatriate workers share the reality of their work experience in the Maldives.

As a country that is still going through its development phase, the Maldives sees major construction and development, a sector where expatriate workers are the main demographic of employees. This, and other work experiences having proved to impose some level of injuries as well as neglect leading to death has opened up the issue of getting proper compensation for employees. As the current Government continues its efforts to ensure a safe workplace for all employees, the Labor Relations Authority (LRA) has now set new regulations when it comes to wrongful workplace death as well as injuries.

The regulation which is titled Workplace Safety and Health Protection Regulation is set to be one of the first milestones for employees across the Maldives in ensuring proper compensation for injuries and wrongful workplace deaths. In addition to the compensation for wrongful death, the regulation also highlights compensation for injuries. Out of this, one of the major compensations that are highlighted includes an amount of MVR 1,260,000 to MVR 19 million being given as compensation in the event of permanent disability. Moreover, other forms of compensation highlighted also include coverage of all medical expenses towards the injury, wages for days absent from work due to medical treatment, compensation for damages due to temporary or permanent disability caused by the injury, and last but not least, compensation in case of death due to injury.
