In a significant stride towards fulfilling a long-standing promise to the residents of Addu City, the Maldives has embarked on its largest bridge development project to date. This ambitious endeavour aims to connect the islands of Hithadhoo and Hulhumaeedhoo, marking a pivotal moment in the country's infrastructure development.
Initial discussions surrounding this bridge project date back to 2018, but it was President Mohamed Muizzu who reiterated the commitment to realize this vision, originally conceived by former President Abdulla Yameen. The proposed bridge, spanning a distance of 13 to 15 kilometres, promises to enhance connectivity and foster socio-economic growth in the region.
The Maldives has previously witnessed the successful completion of notable bridge projects, notably the China-Maldives Friendship Bridge during President Yameen's tenure. This transformative initiative connected the capital city of Male' with Hulhumale' and Hulhule', spanning 1.3 kilometres and symbolizing the strengthening ties between the two nations.
Furthermore, the Greater Male' Connectivity Project, initiated during the administration of former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, continues to progress. This ongoing endeavour aims to construct a 6.7-kilometre bridge linking Male', Villimale', and Thilafushi, further underscoring the government's commitment to enhancing transportation infrastructure.
The current project marks a significant milestone for the present administration, with the contract awarded to The Arab Contractors - Osman Ahmed Osman & Co of Egypt. With the signing of this agreement, preparations for the project, including initial design and survey work, are set to commence.
