MACL meets key stakeholders ahead of Hanimaadhoo International Airport opening

The Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) held a stakeholder meeting on 5 October 2025 to discuss preparations for the opening of Hanimaadhoo International Airport.

During the meeting, which was attended by MACL CEO and Managing Director Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed, Deputy Managing Director Mujthaba Lateef, senior officials from MACL, and Immigration Controller CP (Retd.) Ahmed Faseeh, and Commissioner General of Customs Fatimath Dhiyana, as well as officials from the Maldives Customs Service, Maldives Immigration, Maldives Civil Aviation Authority, Maldives Police Service, Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF), and Maldives National Air Traffic Service (MNETS), the CEO of MACL, Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed, stated that the company is preparing to take over the operation of Hanimaadhoo International Airport.

In late 2024, during a session of the State-Owned Enterprises Committee of Parliament, MACL officials had announced plans to construct a seaplane terminal at the airport, with the opening set for 2025. The airport development project, which commenced in January 2023, will see the development of a 2,460-metre runway and a terminal capable of accommodating 1.3 million passengers annually, as well as supporting Airbus A320 and Boeing 737 aircraft.

With the airport development project setting Hanimaadhoo International Airport as a key hub for connectivity, MACL has now revealed that the efforts are underway to strengthen the safety and security measures ahead of the opening, as MACL prepares to take over the operations of the airport.
