10-year electricity plan announced for Addu amid growing outage concerns
With power outages becoming increasingly frequent in Addu over recent months, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu addressed the issue during a press conference held at the President’s Office on 3 March 2025.
Power outages in Addu City have become common in recent years, raising serious concerns among residents, especially during Ramadan 2025, when blackouts were reported almost daily. Despite earlier assurances from Fenaka Corporation, the company responsible for providing electricity across Addu and Fuvahmulah, that a permanent solution would be in place before Ramadan, the issue remained unresolved.
By 25 March 2025, an additional 1.8 MW generator was dispatched to Addu in an effort to address the recurring outages. This marked the third generator sent to the city in response to the ongoing electricity crisis.
With power outages becoming increasingly frequent in Addu over recent months, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu addressed the issue during a press conference held at the President’s Office on 3 March 2025. He announced that the government would initiate a new project aimed at increasing electricity capacity in both Addu and Fuvahmulah cities. The President explained that the goal of the project is to meet the growing electricity demand in both cities for the next 10 years.
Although the government has introduced 77 new generators and repaired 300 others since November 2024, Addu City has continued to experience frequent power outages in the first half of 2025, due to its growing population and rising electricity needs.
President Muizzu also highlighted one possible reason the problem persists despite these efforts: poor maintenance of existing generators under the previous administration
When we took office on 17 November 2023, the condition of power plants across the islands was bad. I don’t think those before us believed in repairs. Now we’re the ones who have to fix everything. Many places were in very poor condition.
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu.
Adding on, the President also noted that the power outages became a major concern among the citizens, and highlighted that the process to resolve the issue is a continuous one.
These are things that were not maintained in the past. When Ramadan arrives, people’s concerns grow because of the seriousness of the power issue. This is a continuous process.
