MMA opens applications for Islamic Finance and Law scholarships in Malaysia for the 2026 academic year

The Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) has announced a range of scholarship opportunities for the 2026 academic year, offering Maldivian students and professionals the chance to pursue higher education in Malaysia in fields related to accounting, economics, Islamic finance, and law.

The scholarships, administered through the Centre for Banking and Financial Training under the MMA Institute for Research and Training, aim to strengthen the country's human capital and support the development of expertise in key sectors of the financial industry.

Undergraduate Scholarship Opportunity

The scholarship programme includes a fully funded Bachelor's degree opportunity at the University Islam Selangor (UIS), Malaysia.

The programme offered is the Bachelor of Accounting (Hons), which includes a pathway to obtaining the Accounting and Auditing Organisation for Islamic Financial Institutions (AAOIFI) Certificate of Proficiency. The programme consists of three years of full-time study followed by a six-month internship.

Master's Degree Programmes

For postgraduate candidates, scholarships are available at the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) for a range of one-year Master of Laws (LLM) programmes, including:

  • LLM in Islamic Banking and Finance
  • LLM in Business Law
  • LLM in Administration of Islamic Law
  • LLM in International Law

In addition, MMA is offering scholarships for the Master of Economics programme at IIUM. The programme is conducted on a full-time basis and spans two years.

PhD Opportunities in Islamic Finance

Doctoral scholarships are also available through the International Centre for Education in Islamic Finance (INCEIF) University in Malaysia.

Applicants may pursue one of the following three-year full-time programmes:

  • PhD in Islamic Finance (Coursework and Dissertation)
  • PhD in Islamic Finance (Research)
  • PhD in Applied Muamalat (Economics and Finance)

Scholarship Conditions

According to MMA, scholarships will be awarded based on merit and applicants' fulfilment of eligibility requirements.

Selected candidates must comply with the regulations of their respective institutions and maintain satisfactory academic performance throughout their studies.

Recipients may also be required to sign a scholarship agreement before commencing their programmes. MMA noted that withdrawal, suspension, or termination of studies without prior approval may result in the recovery of scholarship funds.

As part of the scholarship conditions, recipients are expected to return to the Maldives upon completion of their studies and contribute to national development. Scholarship recipients will also be required to serve the Maldives for a period of five years after completing their programmes.

Selection Process

Candidates will be assessed based on several factors, including:

  • Academic merit
  • Relevance of educational background
  • Professional experience, where applicable
  • Performance during interviews and assessment processes

Important Information for Applicants

MMA advised prospective applicants to carefully review the admission requirements of their chosen universities before submitting applications.

The authority also warned that providing false or misleading information could result in disqualification or termination of the scholarship. Furthermore, MMA reserves the right to revise or withdraw scholarship offers based on policy requirements or non-compliance with guidelines.

The final award of scholarships remains subject to admission approval from the respective universities. Applicants are also encouraged to obtain pre-approval from the Maldives Qualification Authority (MQA) before commencing their studies.
