Maldives Food and Drug Authority (MDFA) has been in the process of sampling and checking the quality of a variety of medications that are widely available and used, both in the Maldives and in destinations such as India where Maldivians often travel for health ups. Through this process, MFDA has cautioned against a variety of medications that have been noted to not be up to the required standards, often following a warning from the World Health Organisation (WHO).

It appears that during this time frame, MFDA has placed yet another warning and ban on two syrups which are administered to children. The two syrups namely Mefnac Suspension Syrup and Axcel Mefenamic Acid Suspension Syrup, produced in Pakistan's Efroze Chemical Pvt Ltd and Malaysia's Kotra Pharma are often administered to children as painkillers.

According to MFDA, these two painkillers have been detected to contain dangerous chemicals named diethylene glycol and ethylene glycol- which are industrial chemicals. While MFDA has already placed a ban on these two syrups, the agency has also stated that samples of both medications will be sent abroad for further testing. During this time, MFDA has placed a ban on the import, sale, and use of any batches of these medications. Furthermore, the agency has also instructed pharmacies and warehouses to separate the medication from other medications in the warehouses until further testing is done and a conclusion is reached.
