The hEalth Protection Agency (HPA) of the Maldives has released a statement, asking citizens to take precautions as there has been an increase in the reported cases of dengue, respiratory diseases, as well as  fever and diarrhea.

The statement, which was issued on 19 January 2026, stated that cases of dengue, along with fevers and respiratory diseases has reportedly increased from different corners of the Maldives, while in the Greater Male' Area, there has been an increase in cases of vomiting and diarrhoea.

With the increase in such cases, HPA has announced several measures that can be taken in order to stay safe from the spreading of these diseases.

To protect against the common cold and respiratory infections:

  • Wear a mask that properly covers the nose and mouth when in crowded public spaces.
  • Properly washing hands or using hand sanitiser
  • Avoid visiting patients and small children when you are unwell.
  • Avoid going to schools, workplaces, or public gatherings until symptoms improve.

To protect against dengue:

  • Eliminate potential mosquito breeding sites where stagnant water can collect.
  • Use mosquito repellent lotions to prevent bites.

To protect against diarrhea and vomiting:

  • Wash your hands properly before preparing food, serving meals, or feeding others
  • Keep food items covered at all times
  • Properly storing food in the fridge rather than storing in room temperature for long hours
  • If experiencing diarrhoea or vomiting, increase the intake of ORS (Oral Rehydration Salts) or other fluids.

With this, HPA has urged citizens to seek medical attention if any symptoms related to any of the diseases persist. Additionally, HPA urged citizens with kidney and lung conditions as well as diabetes or any other life-long illnesses to seek medical attention before conditions worsen.
