Government plans on setting up health centres in the Maldives

With this, health centres will be able to provide patients with primary health care as well as general practitioner services, resulting in patients getting faster services in hospitals for emergency response and more serious health concerns.

The waiting queue at hospitals is no secret when it comes to the Maldives - especially at public hospitals such as Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH). Recently, however, even when it comes to private hospitals and clinics, the waiting time can range from a few hours to even weeks as patients queue up to receive the best possible treatment. This has been one of the biggest struggles when it comes to receiving immediate healthcare in the Maldives as blood tests and scans also require you to wait in queues, resulting in people oftentimes opting for healthcare trips abroad.

In order to bring a solution to this problem, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has approved the plans to set up health centres in the six wards of Male’ City, as well as in the Atolls. With this, health centres will be able to provide patients with primary health care as well as general practitioner services, resulting in patients getting faster services in hospitals for emergency response and more serious health concerns.

Currently, one of the biggest issues when it comes to queuing up in hospitals is that whether you’re there for a more serious health issue or to get a persisting headache checked, you have to wait in the same queue. This results in delays when it comes to addressing serious health concerns, especially as people have started opting for at-home remedies in order to not go through the waiting time in hospitals.

Work towards the implementation of health centres are set to be implemented before the end of 2024 in collaboration with the Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Health, and Ministry of Social and Family Development.
