Unprecedented weather patterns in Southern parts of Maldives

While the Maldives has recently grappled with scorching heatwaves, this week presents a stark contrast as Southern regions, including Addu and Fuvahmulah City, endure severe storms and flooding. The abrupt shift in weather highlights the erratic nature of climate patterns, signalling potential consequences of climate change.

In Addu City, particularly Feydhoo, approximately 30 houses have incurred varying degrees of damage from the relentless storms and flooding. Responding to the crisis, local authorities, including the police and governmental bodies, have mobilized efforts to assist residents and mitigate further damage.

The extreme weather events witnessed in the Maldives, ranging from sweltering heatwaves to sudden downpours, mirror global trends exacerbated by climate change. Just as Dubai recently faced similar challenges, parts of the Maldives now contend with unexpected bursts of rainfall, resulting in rapid flooding and structural damage to homes.
