While sports is often overlooked in many countries, it plays a vital role in shaping a healthy, active, and resilient society. Beyond being a form of recreation, sports and fitness contribute to physical well-being, mental health, social cohesion, and even economic development. A nation that invests in sports infrastructure fosters a healthier population, reduces healthcare burdens, and creates avenues for youth engagement and professional athletic careers. Recognizing these benefits, the Government of the Maldives has launched a large-scale initiative to enhance sports and fitness facilities across the country.

As part of its commitment to promoting a more active lifestyle, the government has signed contracts for 77 sports-related projects aimed at improving access to fitness and recreation facilities for communities across different islands. These projects include the development of outdoor gyms, fitness and recreation centers, and courts for football, futsal, badminton, and volleyball—providing Maldivians with more opportunities to participate in both recreational and competitive sports.

To execute these projects, the government has partnered with three major state-owned enterprises—Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), Road Development Corporation (RDC), and Fenaka Corporation. These companies will be responsible for the construction and development of the planned facilities, ensuring that quality sports infrastructure is established in various regions of the country.

With an increasing focus on active lifestyles, these projects are expected to have long-term positive impacts, from reducing the prevalence of non-communicable diseases to fostering talent that could represent the Maldives in international sporting events.
