The Upcoming UNWTO Global Tourism Summit

The event, which also coincides with the 50th anniversary of tourism in the Maldives, is scheduled for 15 June 2022.

The Ministry of tourism is organizing the 2022 UNWTO Global Summit  on community-based Tourism, in collaboration with the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) as part of the events held to celebrate 50 years of tourism in the Maldives. The Summit is to be held  at Crossroads Maldives and Paradise Island Resort & Spa from 15 – 16 June 2022.

The summit will provide a platform for global tourism leaders to discuss sustainable development goals and their accompanying challenges from the different perspectives of the diverse actors beyond the tourism sector. The discussions also aim to support locally-led projects that have direct benefits for the local community, and tourists. Finally, it is also aimed at addressing the importance of inclusive community-based tourism to stimulate tourism product diversification - using the case of the different islands of Maldives as examples. 

The opening session is to be held at Crossroads Maldives with keynote speakers such as Ms. Mariyam Noordeen, President, Chefs’ Guild of Maldives, and Dr. HJ. Mohamad Abdullah, Rector, University Technology MARA, Malaysia. The opening session gives insight into Gastronomy Tourism with panelists of three members such as Mr. Abdulla Sobah, Chef de Cuisine, Soneva Fushi, Maldives, Dr. Zakiyya Moosa, Dean of Faculty of Research and Innovations, Avid College, Maldives, and Mr. Chris Seek, President/CEO, Solimar International.

The following sessions are to be held at Paradise Island Resort & Spa. The keynote speaker to enunciate the Agro-tourism session is Dr. Hussain Rasheed Hassan, Minister of Fisheries, Marine Resources, and Agriculture of Maldives, with a panelist of one member, Dr. Aminath Shafia, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Fisheries, Marine Resources and Agriculture, Maldives. The keynote speakers to contend Community-based Tourism session are Ms. Yumna Maumoon, Minister of Arts, Culture & Heritage, Maldives, and Mr. Enrico Gaveglia, UNDP Resident Representative in the Maldives.

The target audience of the Summit include ministerial delegates from member countries, international organizations, industry experts and professionals from around the world, and local associations from the tourism sector.
