In a move welcomed by Maldivian travelers, the government of Thailand has extended the visa exemption period for Maldivian tourists to 60 days, doubling the previous allowance of 30 days. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Maldives announced that this change, effective from May 15, 2024, aligns with Thailand's updated immigration policies.

This extended visa-free period will benefit Maldivians traveling for vacations, business, or healthcare. Thailand is a popular holiday destination for Maldivians, known for its vibrant culture, beautiful landscapes, and shopping opportunities. The increased stay duration allows for a more relaxed travel experience, letting tourists explore the country's many attractions without the need for a rushed itinerary.

Moreover, the extended visa policy will significantly support the Maldives' Aasandha program, which is set to expand its medical coverage to Thailand. Announced by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, this expansion aims to provide Maldivians with access to superior healthcare facilities in Thailand, as well as the United Arab Emirates, reducing the current dependency on medical services in India and Sri Lanka.

For Maldivians looking to extend their stay beyond the 60-day period, a request can be lodged with Thailand's Immigration Department before the initial period expires, potentially granting an additional 30 days at the department's discretion. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also advises Maldivian travelers to obtain travel insurance and respect local laws and regulations during their stay.

This policy change enhances travel flexibility and convenience for Maldivians, whether for leisure or medical purposes, reflecting the strengthened bilateral ties between the Maldives and Thailand.
