Velana Airport
Velana International Airport (MLE) has welcomed Raya Airways with the launch of a new scheduled freighter service connecting Penang, Malaysia, and Malé, establishing the airport’s first scheduled cargo link with Malaysia.
The service operates twice a week using a Boeing 767-200 freighter and is operated by Malaysian cargo carrier Raya Airways in partnership with Southeast Asian logistics company Teleport. Each flight is expected to carry around 40 tonnes of cargo per movement.
The new route provides a direct air cargo connection between Penang and the Maldives, supporting the movement of goods into the country while also strengthening Malé’s role as a regional transshipment point. According to Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), a significant portion of the cargo handled on the new service is expected to be transshipment cargo.
Raya Airways is a Malaysian all-cargo airline that provides scheduled air freight, charter and related cargo services across Asia. The airline began operations in 1993 as Transmile Air Services and was rebranded as Raya Airways in 2014.
The Penang–Malé service adds another destination to Velana International Airport’s growing cargo network. The airport has increasingly focused on developing its transshipment capabilities, with recent cargo links connecting the Maldives to markets across Asia and beyond.
The new Malaysia connection is expected to provide businesses with another regular air freight option while strengthening trade and logistics connectivity between the Maldives and Southeast Asia.
