On 17 December 2025, the Maldives Airports Company Ltd (MACL) welcomed SriLankan Airlines to Terminal 1 of Velana International Airport (VIA) with a ceremonial water salute.
Arriving passengers were welcomed by the High Commissioner of Sri Lanka to the Republic of Maldives, Mohamed Rizvi Hassan; MACL’s CEO & MD, Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed; DMD Mujthaba Latheef; Exco members; and SriLankan Airlines Country Manager, Nayomi Tennakoon.
With a long-standing friendship between both nations, SriLankan Airlines started its flights to the Maldives in September 1979, marking a long-standing presence of the airline in the Maldives. Since the start of its operation in the country, SriLankan Airlines has become one of the widely chosen airlines by Maldivians to connect to destinations, including the neighboring country of Sri Lanka.
